Gay and Lesbian Rights
In the recent times, gay and lesbian rights
have been in the limelight and a cause of concern amongst the masses.
Discrimination on grounds of one's sexual orientation has been a serious
issue that needs to be addressed in earnest to avoid development of negative
sentiments in the gay and lesbian segment of our society. Gays and lesbians
are discriminated in various aspects including adoption formalities, legal
hurdles, and insecure employment. Homosexuals are also at the suffering end
when it comes availing legal support if any crime is committed against them.
Same sex couples seldom enjoy the rights availed by heterosexuals because
the society has played a very biased role when it comes to gay and lesbian
rights.
Various support organizations have come in the
forefront to secure the rights of this minority section as they have been
on the weaker side after coming out with their identity in public. These
organizations have been conducting workshops to protect gay and lesbian
individuals from becoming the victim of harassments at different points of
time. Same sex couples face a hard time while purchasing a property, transferring
the power of attorney, applying for a loan and while renting out their
accommodation. Same sex couples and homosexuals for that matter have a right
to avail legal protection from anti-gay groups. There have been instances
when gays and lesbians have been denied civil and marital rights. To make
the scenario worse, the gay and lesbian individuals have been denied any
kind of legal recognition, unlike their heterosexual counterparts.
A homosexual individual can do a lot if he or
she has been denied an expected hike or has fallen prey to the employer's
firing policy due to the sexual orientation. There are certain states that
have prohibited any and all sorts of employment and workplace discrimination
and if it does occur, the doors are opened to lodge a complaint. The best
solution that can be adopted is to get the policies notified in written and
make sure that the organization adheres to the aforesaid policies. Also,
unless and until a gay partner is a dependent on the other partner, the domestic
partner benefits that accrue from the salary are taxable. This is because
a gay partner is not treated as a spouse in the eyes of the authorities.
By adopting liberal policies and procedures for gay and lesbian groups, the
society can offer them a better and secure position. It is their birthright
to avail the rights similar to those availed by a straight individual without
any flaws.
