The Rainbow Clause:
Giving us the right to choose who; where; when; why; and how.
Pros and Cons of Same-sex Marriages
Marriage is considered to be a universal right
of every individual from which he or she cannot be deprived of. Same sex
marriage has become a relatively familiar term amongst the masses who have
witnessed only heterosexual marriages throughout their lives. The society
has become more liberal with this issue in the recent past. Same sex marriages
are deprived of the equality benefits enjoyed by the heterosexual couples.
Even though majority of people believe that it is unethical to give a legal
status to same sex marriages, homosexual couples are tying a knot. There
are both pros and cons in this kind of marriage that need to be addressed
to better understand the issue.
It has been proved time and again by the researchers
that the sexual preferences of an individual cannot be changed. According
to this view point, there can be serious consequences if a gay or lesbian
is forced by family pressure to marry someone from the opposite sex. This
can spoil the life of both the individuals making conditions worse than before.
The positive aspects of same sex marriages enhance the emotional and physical
satisfaction derived by both the partners. They feel more connected to each
other as they share common perceptions and thoughts. There have been instances
wherein same sex couples have adopted kids and lived in harmony with their
family setting an example for the society. Homosexuals feel more comfortable
when residing with the person of the same sex. Both the partners need to
be of an understanding nature to make the marriage a success. The same holds
true for the same sex marriages where the couples need to be aware of their
mutual and individual needs and act accordingly.
The negative aspects of the same sex marriages
are more prominent both within the straight individuals and the gay and lesbian
community. They suffer from discrimination on account of sexual orientation.
The homophobia resulting from the emotional disturbances leads to depression
and guilt. A relationship cannot sustain if both the partners feel insecure
about their relationship. Moreover, after a passage of time, one of the partners
starts dominating the space of the other partner. This has been observed
particularly in case of gay couples which eventually leads to physical abuse
and assault. In addition to this the health factor also contributes in the
failure of same sex marriages. Same sex couples are more dependent on each
other as compared to their heterosexual counterparts who have more options
to start a new relationship. No-doubt, most of the same sex marriages end
up in one or both the partners living an isolated life if the issues are
not resolved in a short span of time.
